The Russian Geographical Society (RGS), established in 1845, is a learned society dedicated to geographical research and exploration, with a focus on Russia and its surrounding territories. It’s one of the oldest geographical societies in the world, playing a significant role in the country’s history and development.

The Centre of the Russian Geographical Society in Sri Lanka will be celebrating RGS’s 180th anniversary at the Colombo Public Library on the 22nd of Aug, 10.30am onwards, with the presence of Hon. Mr. Anton Jayakodi, Deputy Minister of Environment and Her worship, Ms Vrai Cally Balthazar, Mayor of Colombo as our honorable chief guests. The special occasion will feature the planting of 180 plants of various kinds at the Colombo Public Library premises which benefits the library too.

Following the tree planting the guests will be guided to the first floor where the official proceedings will take place with speech by Madam Maria Popova, Councilor of the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka and Director of the Russian House in Colombo. The event will be concluded by a picture/ photo Exhibition on the history of the RGS and fellowship. The event will be graced by officials from the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka, Russian House in Colombo, Office bearing members of the Centre of the Russian Geographical Society in Sri Lanka, members of the Literary circle and Russian Club.
