Colombo, Sri Lanka – In a landmark event, the Indian Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka (ICCR) celebrated the 576th birth anniversary of Srimanta Sankardev, the revered saint-scholar from Assam, with a unique cultural contribution. A Bargeet, “Narayan Kahe Bhakati Karoon Tera,” was translated into Sinhala for the first time, marking a momentous occasion in the cultural history of both nations. The translated version of this devotional song was performed during the celebration, bridging a cultural connection between India and Sri Lanka.
The translation was masterfully done by Professor Upul Ranjith, while the vocals were beautifully rendered by Asith Athapaththu and Professor Ankuran Dutta, the Director of the Swami Vivekananda Indian Cultural Centre. To commemorate the occasion, an audio CD featuring the Bargeet in both its original and Sinhala versions was officially launched by the Deputy High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Dr. Satyanjal Pandey.
This event is particularly significant as it is believed to be the first time a Bargeet has been recorded in both its original Assamese form and a foreign language, marking a milestone in cultural diplomacy between the two countries.
