In a remarkable achievement for Sri Lanka’s higher education sector, KIU University has emerged as the highest-performing non-state university in the latest Ministry-led Periodic Institutional Review, recording an impressive overall score of 85.86%. The achievement is particularly significant as KIU, despite being a relatively young institution, outperformed many long-established universities in the country, setting a new benchmark for academic excellence, institutional governance, and quality assurance within Sri Lanka’s non-state higher education landscape. Conducted under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, the Periodic Institutional Review is regarded as one of the country’s most comprehensive university evaluation mechanisms. The review assesses universities across six key pillars including governance, management, financial stability, infrastructure, academic planning and quality assurance, as well as staff strength in teaching and research.
Against this rigorous framework, KIU demonstrated exceptional performance across all evaluation areas, consistently meeting and exceeding national quality benchmarks. The university’s academic strength was also strongly reflected at programme level. The BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science secured an outstanding score of 93.7%, positioning it among the highest-rated programmes in Sri Lanka, while the BSc (Hons) in Psychology achieved 83.78%, further strengthening KIU’s academic credentials. In addition, programmes in disciplines such as Accounting, Marketing, and Human Resource Management also successfully met and exceeded required academic standards, demonstrating the university’s balanced and comprehensive academic structure. For students and parents, the achievement provides strong assurance regarding the quality and recognition of education offered by KIU. The university is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), while its programmes are aligned with the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) and guided by internationally accepted academic standards.
Over the years, KIU students have secured full scholarships for postgraduate studies overseas, while graduates continue to demonstrate strong employability across both industry and academia. These achievements reflect the university’s focus on delivering education that creates meaningful pathways to global opportunities and long-term career success. The university’s latest accomplishment also signals a broader transformation within Sri Lanka’s higher education sector, where non-state universities are increasingly demonstrating the ability to compete with, and even surpass, traditional institutions in terms of quality and academic performance. As Sri Lanka moves towards a more globally connected and competitive education system, KIU continues to play a key role in raising standards and expanding opportunities for students across the country. The university stated that it remains committed to continuously strengthening its academic and institutional standards while contributing towards the advancement and transformation of Sri Lanka’s higher education landscape.
