Sri Lanka sees sharp drop in August tourism earnings

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry saw a decline in foreign exchange earnings in August, even as overall revenues for the year continued to grow, according to the Central Bank.

Earnings from tourism fell by 8.2% last month, dropping from USD 282.1 million in August 2024 to USD 258.9 million in August 2025.

Despite the monthly setback, cumulative figures show a positive trend. Tourism revenue for the first eight months of this year reached USD 2.29 billion, compared with USD 2.17 billion in the same period last year — an increase of 5.7%.

The Central Bank released the figures in its latest report.
