Sri Lankan lawmakers have raised concerns in Parliament over an alleged leak of this year’s GCE Advanced Level Economics examination paper.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, MP Chamra Sampath Dassanayake claimed that a private tuition teacher in the Nugegoda area had distributed a question paper that appeared to contain identical questions to those in the official A/L examination.

He said that five of the ten questions in the second Economics paper matched exactly, while 27 out of 50 questions in another set were also the same as those in the leaked paper allegedly used in tuition classes.

During the debate on budget allocations for the Ministry of Education, MP Sha Vithanage alleged that a “powerful individual within the government” was protecting the teacher accused of distributing the leaked material.

He added that it was “deeply disappointing” that a government which came to power promising to curb the private tuition culture was now being accused of such conduct.

The Education Ministry has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
