YouPAH’s HealthBeat Talk Highlights Tobacco Industry’s Involvement in Misleading Cannabis Advertising Campaigns.

In an eye-opening talk titled “HealthBeat – Reporting for Health and Wellness,” organized by the Alliance of Young Professionals for Health (YouPAH) at the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) in Colombo on June 29, 2023, Dr. Manuja Perera brought attention to the role of tobacco companies in cannabis advertising and promotion campaigns. The event drew a diverse audience, including media professionals, university students, and young doctors, eager to learn about the impact of these initiatives on public health.

During the program, Dr. Manuja Perera, a senior lecturer at Ragama Medical College, expressed concerns about the false narratives surrounding cannabis on social media, which downplay its negative effects on mental health.

She emphasized the influence of tobacco companies behind these campaigns, as well as the individuals benefiting financially from them. Dr. Perera urged the mass media to play a crucial role in educating the public and raising awareness about these misleading promotions.

Furthermore, Dr. Manuja Perera addressed the unfounded claims that growing cannabis could boost the country’s economy. She explained that the global cannabis industry has been facing losses, discrediting such assertions.

The HealthBeat talk, organized by YouPAH, aims to empower individuals and encourage them to prioritize their health and well-being. YouPAH, a registered social enterprise in Sri Lanka, consists of passionate young professionals dedicated to promoting public health. Recognizing the evolving definition of health as encompassing physical, mental, and social well-being, YouPAH aims to combat harmful misinformation and protect the younger generation from its adverse effects.
