Marking World Environment Day, Nyne Hotels has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable hospitality, responsible tourism, and positive community impact. As tourism continues to contribute significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, the hospitality group is strengthening efforts to reduce its environmental footprint while creating meaningful experiences for guests.

“Sustainability is not a trend at Nyne; it is embedded in how we operate,” said Founder Nayantara Fonseka. “We are committed to measuring our impact, improving our practices, and ensuring every property reflects our responsibility to the environment and local communities.”

The company has set ambitious targets for 2030, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, lowering water consumption, minimising landfill waste, and significantly reducing plastic usage. Guided by its sustainability framework of Measure, Improve, Report and Certify, Nyne Hotels continues to implement initiatives focused on energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction and community engagement.

CEO Nilka Dabare highlighted measures such as solar energy systems, energy-efficient lighting, bioclimatic design, rainwater harvesting and water-saving programmes, which have helped reduce water consumption by up to 30% across properties. The group has also accelerated efforts to eliminate single-use plastics, expand recycling and composting initiatives, reduce food waste, and prioritise local sourcing to support communities while lowering transport-related emissions.

Nyne Hotels’ sustainability programme aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, responsible consumption and production, climate action, and the protection of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

At its flagship property, Rock Villa, these efforts are further strengthened through the pursuit of the internationally recognised Travelife Sustainability Certification, which assesses environmental, social and economic sustainability performance.

With growing demand for environmentally responsible travel, Nyne Hotels continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable hospitality, delivering experiences that are both meaningful and mindful.
