The stage of Colombo’s Nelum Pokuna Theatre was brought to life with Once Upon a Silver Stage, as nearly 700 young dancers showcased the elegance, discipline, and timeless artistry of Russian classical ballet in a uniquely Sri Lankan setting.Once Upon a Silver Stage, presented by the Russian School of Ballet and Dancing at the Russian House in Colombo, celebrated the school’s Silver Jubilee with a spectacular showcase of talent, dedication and cultural exchange.The ballet students mesmerised the audience with their stunning costumes and captivating performances.The anniversary concert featured 685 students of all ages, highlighting 25 years of ballet education that has steadily flourished in Sri Lanka.

The event was attended by Russian Ambassador Levan Dzhagaryan, diplomats, government officials and members of Sri Lanka’s cultural community, reflecting the enduring friendship between Russia and Sri Lanka as the two nations prepare to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations next year.Established in 2001 under the guidance of Mikhail Ustinov and pioneering ballet instructor Galina Pleshakova, the Russian School of Ballet and Dancing has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s leading institutions for Russian classical ballet training.

Maria Popova, Director of the Russian House in Colombo, described the Silver Jubilee as both a significant milestone for the school and “a beautiful symbol of cultural friendship between Russia and Sri Lanka.” The celebrations also paid tribute to the teachers, staff and parents whose commitment has helped shape the school’s success over the past quarter-century. Special recognition was given to founding instructor Galina Pleshakova, who this year marks 25 years of dedicated service to the institution.

The school’s continued growth has also been supported by Cultural Officer Chandi Aluvihare, whose leadership and guidance over the past 25 years have played a key role in developing the programme from its early beginnings into one of the country’s most respected ballet academies.Today, the Russian School of Ballet and Dancing stands as a testament to the power of cultural collaboration, continuing to inspire new generations of Sri Lankan dancers while strengthening the artistic ties between Russia and Sri Lanka.
